چکیده

In this paper, we address the use of the extrinsic information generated by each component decoder in an iterative decoding process. The algorithm proposed by Bahl et al. (BCJR) and the soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) are considered as component decoders. In both cases, we consider, in a unified view, various feedback schemes which use the extrinsic information in different fashions. Numerical results for a classical rate-1 2 turbo code and a serially concatenated code transmitted over a memoryless additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel are provided. The performance of the considered schemes leads to interesting remarks about the nature of the extrinsic information.

Designing Iterative Decoding Schemes with the Extrinsic Information Transfer Chart

Since the discovery of parallel concatenated (turbo) codes, iterative decoding has become a vital field of research in digital communications. Applications of the “turbo principle” to many detection and decoding problems have been found. While most studies have focused on designing code concatenations with respect to maximum likelihood decoding performance, the convergence properties of iterati...

Iterative turbo decoder analysis based on density evolution

We track the density of extrinsic information in iterative turbo decoders by actual density evolution, and also approximate it by consistent Gaussian density functions. The approximate model is verified by experimental measurements. We view the evolution of these density functions through an iterative decoder as a nonlinear dynamical system with feedback. Iterative decoding of turbo codes and o...

Iterative Decoding Trajectories of Parallel Concatenated Codes

Mutual information transfer characteristics for soft in/soft out decoders are proposed as a tool to better understand the convergence behavior of iterative decoding schemes. The exchange of extrinsic information is visualized as a decoding trajectory in the Extrinsic Information Transfer Chart. This allows the prediction of turbo cliff position and bit error rate after an arbitrary number of it...

Design of Serially Concatenated Codes based on Iterative Decoding Convergence

The design of serially concatenated codes has yet been dominated by optimizing asymptotic slopes of error probability curves. We propose mutual information transfer characteristics for soft in/soft out decoders to design serially concatenated codes based on the convergence behavior of iterative decoding. The exchange of extrinsic information is visualized as a decoding trajectory in the Extrins...

Bandwidth reduction of extrinsic information exchange in turbo decoding

Besides computations and decoding delay, iterations in turbo decoding imply intensive and random extrinsic information exchange between component decoders. This high data exchange rate needs huge communication and routing resources to support the required bandwidth. Proposed is a novel symbol-based criterion to reduce the extrinsic information bandwidth in turbo decoding. The proposed criterion...
